The 2024 IREM Profile and Compensation Studies—CPM® and CPM Candidate, ARM®, and ACoM® —are now available at irem.org. IREM members use the studies to guide their careers, while real estate management companies use them to keep their HR practices competitive. Compared to the last studies released in 2019, the 2024 IREM studies reflect market changes and new workplace practices.

Compensation growth

Since 1995, CPM median base salary has increased by 133%, while median total compensation has increased by 121%. Over the same period, ARM average base salary has increased by 200%, while average total compensation has increased by 193%.¹

Compensation by property type

CPMs in mixed-use management reported the highest total compensation, while those in affordable housing reported the highest base salary. This is a change from 2019, when CPMs in conventional apartment management reported the highest base salary and total compensation.

ARMs in public housing management reported the highest total compensation, while those in senior housing reported the highest base salary. In 2019, ARMs in condos/co-ops/HOAs reported the highest base salary and total compensation.

ACoMs in mixed-use management reported the highest base salary and total compensation.

Workplace trends

Perhaps the most significant workplace development since the last IREM Profile and Compensation Studies is the rise of remote/hybrid work arrangements. How widely adopted is this practice in real estate management? About 53% of CPMs and 58% of ACoMs reported remote/hybrid work as a health/wellness benefit they received, while only 19% of ARMs reported the benefit. By comparison, according to the Pew Research Center, 14% of employed adults in the U.S. are fully remote, while 41% are at least part-time remote.

Offering sabbaticals is another emerging trend focused on retaining high-performing employees long-term. Sabbaticals provide extended time off after a certain period of continuous employment. For example, after five years with a company, an employee might get four months of paid PTO. The 2024 IREM Profile and Compensation Studies found that 7% of CPMs, 5% of ARMs, and 8% of ACoMs received sabbaticals as a benefit.
